Lot No. 80

Konstantin A. Korovin

(Moscow 1861–1939 Paris)
Peasant Girl with Fruit and Flowers, signed C. Korovine, oil on canvas, 89.5 x 62.5 cm, framed, (W)

Provenance:
European private collection.

Letter of authentication issued by the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, dated 2006 (V. Kruglov, G. Kretchina, S. Rimskaja-Korsakova).

We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work.

In 1923 Konstantin Korovin lived in southern France where his wife and son had come to recover from their illnesses. For the first time in his life, the artist was forced to adapt to the demands of the French art market. The stylistic development of his paintings in the 1910s continued after his move to France, although his romantic approach to the subject and the drama of his “Russian” works gave way to a certain lyricism. A light and harmonious palette of tones replaced the formerly intense colours and their contrasts
